Assemblyman DeStefano Backs Smullen’s Traffic Safety Memorial Bill to Honor Victims and Promote Safer Roads
Today, Assemblyman Joe DeStefano (R,C-Medford) proudly joined Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C-Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks) and a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers to advocate for the passage of Assembly Bill A.3938, the “Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law.” This critical legislation will establish a traffic safety memorial sign program to honor the victims of fatal vehicle collisions and raise public awareness about the dangers of reckless, impaired or distracted driving.
“As lawmakers, we have a duty to not only honor those who have been tragically lost but also to take action that prevents future heartbreak for other families,” said DeStefano. “This legislation is about more than just remembrance—it’s about saving lives and reinforcing the need for responsible driving on our roads.”
The Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law will help amplify the message that reckless and distracted driving have severe consequences. By allowing families to publicly commemorate their lost loved ones, this initiative will bring increased awareness to the risks and encourage safer driving behavior across New York state.
“I stand in full support of Assemblyman Smullen’s efforts to make our roads safer while ensuring families have a meaningful way to honor their loved ones,” DeStefano continued. “This bill is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the Smullen family, who are turning their personal tragedy into a lasting and impactful public safety measure.”
