Severe Blood Donation Shortage Due to COVID-19

Assemblyman John Mikulin (R,C,I-Bethpage) is encouraging all eligible blood donors to consider donating as the country is currently facing a severe blood shortage due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Across the nation, blood drives are being canceled and donors are not coming out to give life-saving blood.

“Right now, our nation is facing more than one crisis due to COVID-19,” said Mikulin. “In addition to the health crisis, there is a shortage of blood being donated. While I completely understand a person’s hesitation to go out and donate due to the virus, it is important to note that it is a safe process to give or receive blood, even in this outbreak. If you are comfortable donating, I highly encourage you to do so as just one donation can save up to three lives!”

The American Red Cross advises postponing donations if you have been to China, Hong Kong, Macau, Iran, Italy or South Korea in the past 28 days. They also advise against donation if you have been diagnosed with or are in close contact with anyone who is suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19.
