Assemblyman John Lemondes (R,C-LaFayette) recently signed on to a bill to reform the retirement system for state and local police. The proposal, A.5231, would allow the transfer of past service credits between the state and local employees’ retirement system to the state and local police retirement system. Currently, employees transferring from the state and local retirement system in deputy sheriff positions cannot transfer their past service credits to local police departments. This initiative would allow these credits to cross over. Lemondes is proud to support this policy and hopes it will help law enforcement and emergency service professionals get the support they need as they approach retirement.

“I’m proud to be able to join this bipartisan initiative to support our police officers,” said Lemondes. “Our law enforcement officers should not be forced to work past their retirement age simply because they wanted to get better pay or have a shorter commute. I’ve heard stories from police and firefighters across Central New York and this proposal will help simplify this process and give them the support they deserve.”
