Assemblyman John Lemondes (R,C-LaFayette) has successfully pushed for increased funding for the Finger Lakes-Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance (FLLOWPA) in the One-House Budget proposal. Lemondes, along with his colleagues, sent a letter to Speaker Carl Heastie asking for $3.5 million in state funds to be allocated for the FLLOWPA in the One-House Budget, a $750,000 increase. FLLOWPA is a time-tested organization that plays a critical role in the protection of New York’s freshwater resources in the Finger Lakes region. These added funds will help the Alliance retain its workforce and keep up with the rising cost of supplies and materials as a result of inflation. Lemondes believes this is not just an issue of public health, but it is also an issue of creating jobs and bolstering the region’s economy. While the One-House Budget includes many instances of wasteful and reckless spending, the inclusion of this funding is a great starting point moving forward and a victory for Central New York.

“I’m proud to have fought for this vital funding for our freshwater resources,” said Lemondes. “As we move forward in our budget negotiations, I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to consider the importance water quality has for local businesses, farms and vital industries such as manufacturing and tourism. While I have been outspoken about the many flaws of this One-House Budget proposal, this funding is a step in the right direction for environmental conservation and businesses across Central New York. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the state Assembly to make sure our freshwater resources are properly funded and protected.”
