Lemondes Champions Funding for Finger Lakes-Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance
Assemblyman John Lemondes (R,C-LaFayette) has successfully pushed for increased funding for the Finger Lakes-Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance (FLLOWPA) in the final state budget. Lemondes, along with his colleagues, sent a letter to Speaker Carl Heastie last month asking for $3.5 million in state funds to be allocated for FLLOWPA in the state budget, a $750,000 increase. FLLOWPA is a time-tested organization that plays a critical role in the protection of New York’s freshwater resources in the Finger Lakes region.
These added funds will help the Alliance retain its workforce and keep up with the rising cost of supplies and materials as a result of inflation. Lemondes believes this is not just an issue of public health but also an issue of creating jobs and bolstering the region’s economy. While the finished state budget includes many instances of wasteful and reckless spending, the inclusion of this funding is a great starting point moving forward and a victory for Central New York.
“I’m proud to have been able to secure this vital funding for our freshwater resources,” said Lemondes. “While I’ve been adamant the state budget has its fair share of shortcomings, this is a step in the right direction for environmental conservation and businesses across Central New York. I hope the inclusion of this funding will bring more awareness to this issue in the Finger Lakes region as I continue to work with my colleagues in the state Assembly to make sure these resources are protected for generations to come.”
