Assemblyman John Lemondes (R,C-LaFayette) has successfully advocated for a proposal (A.10238) that would update the requirements to be a code enforcement officer in the city of Auburn. Currently, under state law, code enforcement officers must be residents of the city they work in. Lemondes proposed a change to this policy that would allow code enforcement officers in Auburn to live anywhere in Cayuga County or any neighboring county within the state. Lemondes believes this initiative will improve the functions of the local government and bring more prospective code enforcement officers into the field.

“Code enforcement officers play a critical role in ensuring the safety and legality of day-to-day operations across Auburn,” said Lemondes. “As a locality, we should always strive to bring in the best of the best for our public service positions. We should not immediately disqualify quality workers simply because of their zip code. I’m proud to see this proposal successfully make its way through the state Assembly and I will continue to work in Albany to make sure our local governments have the tools and resources they need.”
