Lemondes Commends U.S.-Ukraine Mineral Deal for Economic Impact
Assemblyman John Lemondes (R,C-LaFayette) is praising the recent minerals deal between the U.S. and Ukraine for its projected impacts on the national, state and local economies. Earlier this week, the Trump Administration announced a joint investment fund between the countries that would facilitate the sharing of future revenues from Ukraine’s mineral reserves. This agreement would allow the U.S. to reduce its dependence on other countries, such as China, for critical minerals which are used to manufacture EV batteries, renewable energy and defense tech. It would help stimulate job growth in the energy, defense and automotive industries while promoting peace and prosperity with our ally in Eastern Europe.
“For too long, our nation’s most profitable industries have had to rely on economic competitors like China,” said Lemondes. “President Trump’s new deal with Ukraine will help bring these jobs back to the states and put money back in the pockets of American companies. Under this agreement, the president’s administration is putting the pieces together to facilitate stronger economic ties and increased national security.”
In recent years, New York state has become a leader in clean energy and mineral-based industries. The Central New York region, in particular, has welcomed companies such as Micron, which intends to build a plant in Clay and create thousands of well-paying jobs. Access to these critical minerals will continue to make the region a hub for companies to invest in.
“Central New York is officially open for business,” said Lemondes. “Our region has been a leader in innovative, mineral-based technologies, and under this new agreement, we will continue to see historic investments in these industries. With companies like Micron already investing up to $100 billion in our region before this deal took place, Central New York has proven itself as a prime location for economic growth. I’m proud to see this agreement take place, and I will continue to work with this administration to ensure our region continues to be a beacon of innovation and prosperity.”
