Lemondes Calls out Governor Hochul for ‘Flip Flop’ on CLCPA

Assemblyman John Lemondes (R,C–LaFayette) commented today on reports that Gov. Hochul is preparing to announce a proposal to modify the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). While Minority lawmakers have raised concerns for years about the law’s unrealistic deadlines and mandates for reducing fossil fuel use, the governor had remained a strong defender of the policy until recently, which Lemondes also noted is an election year for Governor Hochul.

According to its official website, the CLCPA aims to achieve 100% zero-emission electricity by 2040 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 85% below 1990 levels by 2050. Hochul has now begun to shift her tone on these targets, acknowledging that they may not be achievable without significant increases in energy costs.

Despite state Majority lawmakers inconsistency, Lemondes has continued to advocate for his plan to bring down energy costs through consumer choice and cutting unnecessary red tape. Lemondes believes the governor’s reversal highlights what he sees as the governor’s inconsistency and lack of leadership.

“State Majority lawmakers are now openly admitting what we have been saying all along,” said Lemondes. “The CLCPA is unrealistic and is actively raising costs for working families across our state. Now, as we head into an election year, Governor Kathy Hochul is hoping New Yorkers will forget about the years of shameless advocacy she devoted to this failed policy. The governor cannot have it both ways. It is time to stop playing political games and fully repeal the CLCPA to bring down costs for working families.”
