Assemblymember Rivera and Allentown Association Announce Creation of Park on Allen Street

New space will offer tranquil reprieve from busy Allen Street

Buffalo, NY – Assemblymember Jon D. Rivera announced today that he has secured $100,000 in state funding to convert the long vacant lot at 169 Allen St. into a much-needed pocket of greenspace along the Allen Street corridor.

The difficulties and logistics of transforming a formerly privately-owned, vacant lot into a community asset underscores the significance of Rivera’s announcement and partnership with the Allentown Association to create the new space.

It will be intended to provide a landscaped sanctuary amidst the busyness of the city – a place where people can escape, unwind, and enjoy the outdoors without leaving the neighborhood. It will also add to a robust list of such spaces within the Allentown neighborhood, which includes Days Park, Johnson Park, Arlington Park, and Tony Sisti Park.

The park will be a catalyst to bring the community together through family-oriented events such as movie nights, performances by Theatre of Youth, ice cream socials, pop-up artist fairs, the annual holiday tree lighting and other activities in a flexible, professionally landscaped space.

The hope is that the creation of this designated space will also lead to a fitting tribute to Chuck Incorvaia, also known as Bubble Man, a longtime Allentown resident and a fixture of our community for many years.

The creation of the new space isn't just about providing a beautiful atmosphere – it’s about fostering a sense of community and well-being. Studies have shown that access to green spaces promotes physical activity, supports mental well-being, and fosters social bonds, all of which contribute to a more vibrant, resilient community.

This new pocket of green space on Allen Street will serve as a lasting testament to the power of community-focused development, a space that enhances not only the physical landscape but also the spirit of the neighborhood.

Assemblymember Rivera’s office will also partner with the Allentown Association to host a series of community outreach meetings intended to provide feedback sessions for interested residents and to create a dialogue between those who will most benefit from the new space.

Today’s announcement also comes in preparation and anticipation of the Allentown Association’s upcoming, holiday-themed First Friday Gallery Walk on Dec. 6.

On the first Friday of each month from 6 PM to 9 PM, Allentown’s art galleries, performance artists, musicians, restaurants, retailers, and more come together to create a rich cultural attraction. Select galleries Downtown and in the Elmwood Village also participate in Allentown First Fridays.

Assemblymember Jon D. Rivera said, “Creating green space in such a densely populated urban area is no small feat, and securing state funding to bring this vision to life underscores my commitment to building a healthier, more connected community. This isn’t just about creating a space for recreation; it’s about preserving a space where residents, visitors, and families can come together to relax, play, and take a moment for themselves away from the busy shopping and dining corridor.”

State Senator Sean Ryan said, “One of Buffalo’s defining features is our historic Olmsted Park system, which at the time of its creation was a revolutionary idea to ensure accessible green space across the city. Thanks to Assemblymember Rivera and funding from New York State, Allentown will have new greenspace featuring a community focused park. We are thankful for our community partners and look forward to seeing this new space come to life.”

Councilmember Mitch Nowakowski said, “As the Council Member representing Allentown, I am thrilled to see state funding allocated to transform the long-vacant lot at 169 Allen Street into a vibrant greenspace. This new park will bring a much-needed sanctuary to the Allentown neighborhood, offering a welcoming space for relaxation, community events, and enhancing residents' quality of life. Projects like this reflect the exciting growth of the city, and this park will serve as a central hub, fostering a stronger, more connected community.”

Allentown Association President Patty Macdonald said, “For 62 years The Allentown Association has been a leading advocate for preservation, not just of the historic building stock but also preservation of the fabric of community and the bonds created when residents and businesses have shared spaces to foster a true sense of community within the historic district. This new community space will bring the neighborhood together in new and creative ways.”

Erie County Legislature Chairwoman April N.M. Baskin said, “Transforming this vacant lot into a vibrant community space for Allentown is a testament to the power of having a vision and the collaboration between the Allentown Association and the community. This project will not only revitalize Allen St., but also provide a welcoming place for neighbors and visitors to connect and thrive. We are grateful for Assemblymember Jon Rivera’s leadership and commitment to fostering stronger, more inclusive communities.”

Erie County Legislator Lawrence Dupre said, “Thank you to Assemblymember Jon Rivera for securing critical state funding for this community space on Allen. Having access to green spaces in urban areas is essential for fostering healthier, and more vibrant communities. This investment enriches our neighborhood and creates a place for all to gather and connect with nature and the community.”
