Assemblymember McMahon Supports ‘Home of My Own’ with $150,000 Grant

Assemblymember Karen McMahon (D-Amherst) announced that she helped to secure a New York State grant totaling $150,000 for Home of My Own of Western New York. Home of My Own works to provide community housing for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

Home of My Own apartments are inclusive, community-focused living situations, specifically organized to promote socialization and connection, and to foster friendship while also championing independence. The grant funding will be utilized to refurbish the apartments at Home of My Own’s first property on Linwood Avenue in the Village of Williamsville.

Improvements to the property include roofing, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and other work to make the spaces livable and accessible.

“Every parent wants their children to grow into successful young adults, ready to leave the nest and become active members of the community,” said Assemblymember McMahon. “Finding appropriate housing, however, is one of the biggest challenges for individuals with I/DD. Home of My Own’s new apartments in the Village of Williamsville bring communal living outside the traditional group home model, with shared spaces and resources. This innovative living arrangement provides independence for the residents and peace of mind for families. I was thrilled to be able to present $150,000 in funding to Home of My Own to help support the refurbishment of these apartments, and I am overjoyed to welcome the new neighbors to the community.”

“On behalf of Home of My Own of WNY, I extend our deepest gratitude to Assemblymember Karen McMahon for securing $150,000 in funding to support our mission,” said Karen M. Cuddy, President of the Home of My Own of WNY Board of Directors. “This investment will be used to help complete our current project. These spaces are designed to fulfill our mission of building true community while creating safe, supportive, and independent housing opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With her partnership, we are one step closer to making the dream of a home of their own a reality for the people we serve.”
