Legislation (A7567A/S6850-A) introduced by Senator Tim Kennedy (D-Buffalo) and Assemblymember Karen McMahon (D-Amherst) to set standards for alternative fuel quality passed both the Assembly and Senate in the last session and was recently signed by the Governor. Today, the new law will take effect in New York State.

The law will allow the Commissioners of Agriculture and Environmental Conservation to adopt rules and regulations relating to the quality of alternative fuel sources such as ethanol, methanol, butanol, and non-petroleum liquid or gaseous fuels, other than alcohol, derived from biological materials. It will also authorize the inspection and testing of alternative fuels offered for sale or in the process of delivery or transport.

“I am very proud to have sponsored this legislation and to see it officially cross the finish line,” said Assemblymember McMahon. “With this law taking effect, it will allow New York State to adopt quality standards for alternative energy. As we work toward a greener future, alternative fuel will become more of the norm and our regulatory standards and processes should reflect that. With this law, New York is clearing the way for a cleaner future, and confidence in alternative fuel options.”
