Brown: Increased Oversight of the MTA Needs to be A top Priority
Assemblyman Keith Brown (R,C-Northport) attended a press conference in Albany on Monday, March 3, 2025, alongside members of the Assembly Minority Conference calling for increased oversight of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and highlighting Assembly Bill A.6088, which requires the MTA to hire a certified independent accounting firm to perform a comprehensive forensic audit of the Authority.
The governor and Albany Majority lawmakers have claimed that without congestion pricing, the MTA will continue to suffer financially. However, Brown and his colleagues have highlighted several reports that speak to the serious inadequacies and patterns of fiscal mismanagement within the MTA system. These inadequacies include $800 million in uncollected bus and subway fares, $5 billion in unpaid tolls, falsification of inspection reports and more.
“New Yorkers should not be responsible for digging the MTA out of the deep financial pit it has dug itself into over the past few years,” said Brown. “Every time we hear about the MTA, it has taken one step forward and three steps back when it comes to making necessary changes and being more fiscally responsible. The MTA must be held accountable.”
“I fully support our Assembly Minority Conference in calling for increased oversight of the MTA and requiring that it undergo an extensive independent forensic audit. This audit is long overdue, and now that the Governor’s Congestion Pricing plan is on the verge of being eliminated by the federal government, this audit must be completed now more than ever before. The MTA’s disturbing pattern of fiscal mismanagement and overspending problems must be addressed and corrected immediately.”
