Assemblyman Zebrowski Introduces Legislation to Protect New York Families Impacted by Federal Government Shutdown

The bill provides furloughed or unpaid employees a temporary extension to pay their local property taxes that are due at the end of the month

Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski announced today that he introduced legislation to allow municipalities to provide an extension to furloughed or unpaid employees to pay their local property taxes. County, town, and village property taxes are due January 31st. This legislation will give New Yorkers that are impacted by the government shutdown, one of the longest in history, additional time to pay their property taxes without penalty until the shutdown is over.

“Over 50,000 New Yorkers work for the federal government and an estimated 16,000 are impacted. We are seeing the effects of this shutdown right in our backyard. This is a small way New York and our local governments can assist residents to make ends meet,” said Assemblyman Zebrowski.

The legislation would authorize local governments to provide qualified residents that request it, extended time to pay their property taxes. The temporary extension will ensure individuals are not penalized and will end 90 days after the shutdown is over. Individuals will have to provide proof of employment and demonstrate that they are unpaid due to a lapse in the federal budget.

“Unfortunately this shutdown is being shouldered by hardworking men and women across our State. Hopefully this bill will give New York families some relief and another option during this difficult time,” concluded Assemblyman Zebrowski.
