Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre Passes Emergency Funding to Address COVID-19

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (D-Babylon) announced that she recently helped pass a measure that allocates $40 million in emergency funding to help combat the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) (Ch. 23 of 2020).

“As we hear more about the novel coronavirus, I want to assure you that I’m working tirelessly with my fellow state officials and health care experts to remain apprised of the situation so we can protect public health,” said Jean-Pierre. “Early this week, I helped pass $40 million in emergency funding that will help ensure New York is fully prepared. The health and safety of our families is my top priority, and I’ll continue to keep Long Island residents updated as I get more information.”

The emergency funding will be used to purchase medical equipment and supplies as well as hire and train additional health care workers. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services has stated that there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus or patients under investigation in Suffolk County.[1] In order to prevent the spread of germs, state and federal health officials are recommending everyday preventative actions to take, including:

  • washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
  • avoiding touching your nose, mouth and eyes;
  • covering your cough or sneeze;
  • trying to avoid contact with someone who is sick; and
  • disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention only recommends individuals wear facemasks if they are already sick to prevent spreading germs – not to protect themselves against from respiratory diseases.[2]

Suffolk County’s Public Health Hotline is 631-787-2200 and can be accessed Monday through Friday from 9AM to 5PM. For emergencies after 5PM and on weekends, please call 631-852-4820.
