Slater, Harckham Dedicate Part of Route 202 in Honor of Yorktown Hero Captain Kenneth Sgroi

Following Assemblyman Matt Slater’s (R,C-Yorktown) bipartisan proposal to name a portion of Route 202 in the town of Yorktown the “Captain Kenneth Sgroi Memorial Highway” Slater and Sen. Pete Harckham were joined by the Yorktown community in dedicating part of the road in the hero’s honor where his legacy will live on and his contributions to the Yorktown community will never be forgotten.

Sgroi was only 37 years old when an abrupt illness took his life. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain in honor of his dedication and tremendous service to the department. He was an exemplary law enforcement officer who possessed the strongest sense of dedication toward his community, and this memorial contributes to honoring his devotion to the Yorktown community. In 2017, Sgroi was promoted to the rank of sergeant as a result of his hard work, talent and dedication. He also oversaw the Yorktown Police Department Field Training Program. Sgroi was promoted to lieutenant in July of 2022, when he was assigned as the staff division commander.

“This community will always honor and remember Kenny. In July of2022, I had the distinct honor as town supervisor of seeing Kenny promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He was proud to be a police officer and proud to be a member of the Yorktown Police Department and it is my hope that the thousands of people who drive on this stretch remember Kenny and are inspired by his unwavering service and heroism to the Yorktown community,” said Slater.

“Captain Kenneth Sgroi was an exemplary law enforcement officer, and the new signage signaling that part of Route 202 here in Yorktown is renamed in his honor will remind us of his deep commitment to this community. I thank Assemblymember Slater for his work in getting this recognition passed in the State Legislature and also Yorktown Police Chief Robert Noble and the Yorktown Police Department for ensuring Captain Sgroi’s legacy of service and professionalism is not forgotten,” said Sen. Harckham.

“Captain Kenneth Sgroi served Hudson Valley families with dignity, honor and a compelling sense of duty—first as a Dutchess County deputy sheriff and then as a Yorktown police officer for nearly 13 years. His life was a testament to the courage and devotion of our law enforcement heroes who go above and beyond in the line of duty each and every day. The Captain Kenneth Sgroi Memorial Highway is a fitting tribute to a man who impacted the lives of so many in our community,” said Rep. Mike Lawler.

“To me, seeing the Sgroi highway sign driving down Route 202 reminds me of the sacrifice law enforcement personnel give to us every day. It was tragic losing Kenny in such a sudden way and at a young age but he is a reminder of what our law enforcement can be in Yorktown.” said Ed Lachterman, Yorktown town supervisor

“On behalf of all of us at the Yorktown Police Department, I'd like to thank New York State Assemblyman Matt Slater for his persistence and thoughtfulness, in assisting us in honoring our fallen brother, Yorktown Police Department Captain Kenneth Sgroi in such a meaningful way.To have the section of Route 202 where our police headquarters is located now memorialized as the “Captain Kenneth Sgroi Memorial Highway,” is a daily reminder that Kenny's chosen profession, his time with us and his stellar character matters greatly in the Yorktown community,” said Robert M. Noble, Chief of Police.

Sgroi is survived by his wife Anne, his daughter Gabriella and his son Joseph, his sister Pamela and her wife Lisa, his mother Alice, his nieces Layla and Ava, and nephew Julian.
