Simpson Speaks Out Against Unfunded Mandates on Residential Fire Sprinklers
A Statement from Assemblyman Matt Simpson
Assemblyman Matt Simpson (R,C-Lake George) shared his concerns about the growing trend of unelected bureaucrats in New York imposing mandates that bypass the Legislature and directly impact the cost of living in our state. The latest proposal to require automatic fire sprinkler systems in all newly built homes is a prime example of the administrative state overreaching its bounds, and it’s a step in the wrong direction for New York families.
“While fire sprinklers may enhance safety, forcing this mandate on new home construction is a costly overreach that threatens affordability. At a time when families are already struggling with rising costs, we cannot afford to implement policies that further drive up housing prices.
Simpson continued, “The decision to include fire sprinklers in a home should rest with the homeowner and builder, not with Albany bureaucrats. Mandates like this strip away consumer choice, stifle affordability and exacerbate the state’s ongoing affordability crisis.
“New York’s families need relief from excessive costs and regulations—not more obstacles to achieving the dream of homeownership. We must push back against these unfunded mandates that disregard the Legislature and burden New Yorkers,” said Simpson.
