Statement on Trump Rescinding Affirmative Action Policies

July 3, 2018

As a young Black man from The Bronx, who like many fellow children of immigrants, was the first in my family to graduate from college, I am disgusted yet unfortunately not surprised by the federal administrationís reversal on Obama-era affirmative action policies that diversify schools. For decades, affirmative action has helped students from New York and across our country achieve their highest educational aspirations, which then helps them become productive citizens that contribute to our community. This policy reversal is the latest blatantly racist and discriminatory attack by Education Secretary DeVos and the Trump-Pence administration.

This decision also ignores many of the underlying problems facing students from having insufficient teachers of color and resources, to an overabundance of economic barriers and societal challenges that create inequity and present a more difficult path to go to college in the first place.

In addition to breaking from the constitutional precedent of race being permitted in student selection, it is another troubling shift from leaders on both sides of the aisle of doing what is morally right and fair. We will continue to instill in our children that despite this administrationís devastating agenda, that your block wonít block your blessing, and your zip code wonít deny your destiny.
