Fitzpatrick, Long Island Delegation Declare May 10 As Rosie The Riveter Day
Honors the courage and sacrifice of women during World War II
Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick (R,C,I–Smithtown) today voted to pass a resolution in Albany to memorialize May 10, 2007 as Rosie the Riveter Day in New York state. The resolution, put forth by the Assembly Minority Long Island Delegation honors women who went to work at shipyards, steel mills, and other industrial jobs while the men went to serve in World War II.
“At the height of World War II, these women took it upon themselves to shed social norms and perform the duties of the men who left to serve on our front lines,” said Fitzpatrick. “They demonstrated the courage and patriotism the country needed during those troubling times.”
The resolution recognizes the devoted efforts of the women heroes who left their homes to take on atypical industrial jobs in support of the soldiers in service abroad. It was the first time that large numbers of women directly challenged traditional stereotypes, and subsequently opened the professional doors for women of future generations.
Fitzpatrick, along with the Assembly Minority Long Island Delegation, will be honoring over 60 Long Island women at a ceremony being held on Thursday, May 10 at the American Air Power Museum at Republic Airport in Farmingdale.
