Assemblymember Phil Steck and Schenectady Officials Unveil Upgraded Fire Training Facility Funded by $250,000 Grant
Schenectady, NY – Assemblymember Phil Steck (D-Colonie) joined City of Schenectady officials to unveil significant upgrades to the Schenectady Fire Department’s Training Facility. The upgrades were made possible by a $250,000 State and Municipal Facilities Program (SAM) grant secured by Assemblymember Steck in 2022. The new improvements will enhance the department’s ability to train firefighters for a wide range of emergencies, ensuring they are better prepared to protect the community.
The grant funded critical upgrades, including the complete renovation of the 1938 Fire Training Tower and the replacement of an outdated "smoke house" structure with a new, modern facility designed for similar training exercises. Additional improvements were made to three large storage structures – one used for obstacle course drills and two for confined space training. These updates provide state-of-the-art environments for firefighters to practice emergency response techniques.
"Today’s unveiling marks a significant investment in the safety and preparedness of our firefighters," said Assemblymember Steck. "The upgraded facilities ensure that Schenectady’s first responders are equipped with the best possible training, enabling them to handle the complex emergencies they face daily. I’m proud to have secured this funding and see the impact it’s already having on our community’s safety."
The improvements to the fire training facility are part of a series of initiatives led by Steck to enhance public safety in Schenectady County. In October, Steck, along with Assemblymember Angelo Santabarbara, helped secure $800,000 in funding for the purchase of a new fire engine. Additionally, Steck played a key role in securing $125,000 for upgrades to Niskayuna Fire District #1’s River Road Station.
“Ensuring our first responders are fully equipped with the necessary tools and training is essential to the safety and well-being of our community,” said Mayor McCarthy. “I’m grateful to Assemblymember Steck for securing this vital funding. It will strengthen our ability to protect Schenectady residents and ensure our firefighters are prepared to face any emergency.”
These investments are part of Steck’s ongoing commitment to public safety in Schenectady County, underscoring his dedication to providing the necessary resources to support local fire departments and protect residents.
