Today, New York has plenty to celebrate. As the U.S. Womens World Cup soccer team celebrates its victory, the governor has signed into law crucial legislation to combat wage discrimination an issue our champions have been calling attention to. Here in New York, its been a long-fought battle and far too many hardworking individuals have put up with wages much lower than they deserve for too long, and its time to remedy that.
As a civil rights lawyer, Ive spent my career fighting to get employees the compensation theyve earned. The new law, which I helped pass, is a huge step forward. It expands equal pay provisions for substantially similar work and prohibits pay differentials based on factors including age, race, gender identity or expression, military status, national origin, religion, disability and those protected under New Yorks Human Rights Law (Ch. 93 of 2019). No one should be faced with a smaller paycheck because of their employers prejudice.
