Safe Staffing Bills Pass Legislature Statement by Assembly Health Committee Chair Richard Gottfried

Lifesaving legislation to require safe staffing standards in hospitals and nursing homes

“Today the Legislature is passing two safe staffing bills to ensure adequate nurse staffing in hospitals and nursing homes (A.108B/S.1168A and A.7119/S6346.) For decades, nurses, patients and their families, and legislators have fought for passage of a safe staffing law.

The bills are carried in the Assembly by Assembly Member Aileen Gunther, a registered nurse and in the State Senate by Senator Gustavo Rivera, who chairs the Senate Health Committee. The Assembly Health Committee held its first public hearing on the issue in 1996, and I introduced the first bill soon after.

Covid-19 has made this long-standing need even more clear and compelling, as shown in reports by Attorney General Tish James and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group. Lives are at stake.

Congratulations and thanks to the sponsor Assembly Member Gunther, Speaker Carl Heastie, and the workers whose dedication to patient care made this possible.”
