Smullen ‘Fired Up’ About Further Firearm Restrictions

A statement from Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C,Ref-Meco) on the passage of new restrictive gun legislation in New York

“Today the New York City Assembly Majority continued their assault on the Second Amendment with another package of restrictive gun legislation,” said Smullen. “When a downstate majority decides to dictate how New Yorkers live their lives, upstate New York suffers at their hands. This is another example of the disconnect between the interests of New York City politicians and our upstate values. If we remain quiet on these issues, they will continue to pursue their restrictive agenda without hearing from responsible gun owners, which is why I will remain vocal on this issue. These are attacks on the liberties guaranteed in our constitution, and I will oppose any legislation that continues to deteriorate its importance.”

Some of the bills brought to the floor included:

  • A.2690, which extends the background check process from three days to 30 days
  • A.2689, which allows any family member, school administrator, or ex-partner to claim that you are a danger to yourself or others, and mandates the confiscation of any firearms in your possession without due process
