Smullen: Direct-Care Workers Deserve Proper Funding

Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C,Ref-Meco) joined his colleagues and direct-care advocates to urge the Governor to include the proper funds for direct-care workers in the final state budget. Smullen and his fellow legislators are fighting to ensure direct-care workers are paid the living, competitive wages they deserve to retain employees and continue to provide high-quality services to those in need. After the rally held today in the Capitol for direct care, the Governor promised to restore funding that was initially cut in the budget.

“I am pleased to see that our direct-care workers are being heard,” said Smullen. “For years the state has failed to adjust wages based on the cost of living for direct-care workers, so this is a step in the right direction for thousands of New Yorkers who benefit from these services. Direct-care workers are a vital asset for many people across the state, and the services they provide are essential. As legislators, we can come together and provide these men and women with the wages they deserve.”
