Schimminger, Golombek Announce Funding for Riverside Park Football Field
Buffalo, NY – On Aug. 27, Assemblyman Robin Schimminger and Buffalo North District Councilmember Joseph Golombek held a press conference announcing that city officials have secured funding for a construction project that will involve a number of improvements to the football field in Riverside Park. A $150,000 legislative capital project grant that Schimminger secured earlier this year will cover the related expenses, with the majority of related construction scheduled to take place sometime in 2019. An additional $75,000 in funding for the prospective project will come from the City of Buffalo’s 2017 city capital budget.
This money will enable the City of Buffalo’s Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets to start work on improvements including crowning the field, installation of drainage and a water source for irrigation, overseeding of the field and placement of turf.
All capital projects are subject to a contract signed by the state Dormitory Authority (DASNY) which will authorize the release of the money. The majority of the construction is expected to begin next year. Schimminger, who sponsored the grant request last year to which the DASNY gave a green light in February, said the funding will allow Northwest Buffalo youth to reap the benefits of a long-awaited renovation.
“This funding will help the youth of Riverside and Black Rock to avail themselves of a long-awaited enhancement to their football field,” said Schimminger. “This will not only improve the aesthetics, but also its safety. The lessons they learn will benefit them in the future as they continue on through the playing field of life.”
“I would like to thank Assemblyman Schimminger for all of his assistance and for the ease of working together with the Legislature for this funding,” said Golombek. “This is an example of how city and state can collaborate in order to meet a common goal.”
