Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte: Ending DACA Ends Dreams
"This nation was built by immigrants and their dreams for a better life. Former President Obama introduced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act (DACA) in 2012 for undocumented minors to receive a two-year renewable deferred action from deportation and the ability to apply for a work permit, attend college, and serve in the military. President Trump's decision to end the DACA program ignores that history and dims the beacon of hope that America represents. It is morally wrong and it is based on ignorance and racism. DACA gives young immigrants who were brought here by their parents a chance to succeed and give back to the only country they know. It gives these 'Dreamers' a chance to live without fear of deportation.
"As a child of Haitian immigrants, I am deeply affected by the President's decision to end all the benefits and protections provided for 800,000 young people under DACA. I am thankful to Mayor Bill De Blasio for declaring New York City a sanctuary city, and to live in a State that values diversity and wants to provide a safe space for those New Yorkers who are particularly vulnerable because of their immigration status.
"According to a recent survey of immigrants protected by DACA, 97 percent of the respondents are currently working or in school.[1] Since its implementation, DACA has increased opportunities, improved lives and boosted our economy. Doing away with the program is not only morally wrong, but economically irresponsible. These young people pay taxes, purchase homes, start businesses and create jobs. They help us build stronger communities and are embedded in the foundation of our states and our nation. They are Americans; this is their home, and we must not turn our backs on them. Congress must work immediately to pass comprehensive immigration reform – the need has never been greater.
"Here is my message to Dreamers everywhere: We see you, and we are with you."
