(June 24, 2010) Assemblywoman Galef recently hosted Donna Sharrett who is working with the Ossining Organic Community Garden and Dawn Orza working on the Briarcliff Middle School Outdoor Classroom, on her television show Dear Sandy. This episode focuses on the growing popularity of community and school gardens and their positive impact on the surrounding community. These guests share their thoughts on the impact of public gardens. They discuss with Assemblywoman Galef the role the public has in creating a community garden and what school gardens mean for students. Donna Sharrett discusses the purpose of creating a community garden and how it can contribute to a community. Sharrett also explains how to obtain your own plot in the garden, what is being grown there and how the garden caters to individuals of all gardening levels. In addition, Dawn Orza spoke about the creation of Briarcliff Middle Schools Outdoor Classroom. Orza explained how the classroom is being worked into the school curriculum and how students have been involved in the planning of the garden and what they are learning from their time spent with nature. The creation of community gardens and outdoor classrooms are wonderful initiatives that have a lasting impact on communities and schools, said Assemblywoman Galef. I am so fortunate to have Donna Sharrett and Dawn Orza here with me to explain their work with these gardens and lend their input and knowledge, which makes for a more positive and beautiful community.
