“Speak Out” with Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Presents: Update on Schools’ New Approaches to Sharing Services

Panelists discuss paths to cost savings for taxpayers
October 11, 2011

Assemblywoman Sandy Galef is joined by School Superintendents and Business Officials from the 90th Assembly District to discuss changes that are starting to show financial savings. The forum features three knowledgeable, panelists, Susan Schmidt, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Management Services, Sullivan BOCES, Dr. Jim Langlois, District Superintendent Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES, and Dr. Barbara Fuchs, Superintendent Putnam Valley CSD. Nine other administrators also comment on what is happening in their districts.

The forum airs in four parts. In the first segment, Assemblywoman Galef introduces the topic and important background information related to taxes in New York State. Then the panelists describe how and with what results they have consolidated administrative positions, reduced out-of-district as well as between-district transportation costs, established a central business office, and explored distance learning as a way to reduce costs while offering additional course material to students. Finally part four is given over to questions from the public. While almost all the questioners favor the consolidation that has been accomplished to date, many wonder why still more cannot be done quickly. The panelists explore what laws, psychological barriers, economic incentives, and practical considerations are in play.

“I was so pleased to hear about some of the concrete results we are starting to see from efforts to consolidate school services,” said Galef. “I think the questions from the audience indicate the desire to see even more done and I hope these conversations ignite people to call for more work in this area.”
