Assemblymember Pichardo: Muslim Ban Goes Against Everything We Stand For

January 30, 2017

“President Trump’s executive order barring immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the U.S. stands in stark contrast to the values for which our nation stands – equality, tolerance and acceptance.

“By suspending refugee admission, barring Syrian refugees and others from entering the country, this ban endangers many whose lives depend on coming here. New York has already stood up to this indefensible ban, with a judge ruling against the detention of individuals at airports. But more must be done.

“We can’t stand by while any group is systematically targeted. As the proud son of immigrants, I know that this country represents hope to so many who leave their homes and countries in search of a better future. Those coming here to New York are greeted by the Statue of Liberty, which proclaims to the world that the oppressed, the subjugated and the disenfranchised can find their home here. Unjust measures like this one eat away at the ideals of our great state and country. I won’t stand for that. We must resist and fight back – and I encourage anyone with questions or concerns to visit my district office. Together, we can stand up and make it clear – New York State is a place of inclusion for everyone, regardless of race or creed.”
