Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,I—Pulaski) is challenging the children in the community to read, with an adult or on their own, for at least 15 minutes a day for 40 days throughout July and August as part of the New York State Assembly Summer reading challenge.

Reading challenge brochures are available at local schools and libraries for parents and children. The brochure, which features a calendar and a space to keep track of reading time throughout the summer, challenges kids to read with an adult or on their own for at least 15 minutes a day for 40 days throughout the summer months.

“A good foundation in literacy gives children an advantage in school. Study after study shows that the harder reading is for a child, the less likely they are to feel confident in the classroom. It’s important that children learn to be readers when they are young,” said Barclay. “I’m pleased that every year the response to the program grows. More teachers, librarians and parents help circulate the brochures and take the time to explain the program.”

More than 5,000 Summer Reading Brochures have been circulated to schools and libraries within the 124th Assembly District. Brochures also are available at the Assembly office. Those who complete the challenge are encouraged to mail in their form to obtain a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading Certificate. They also are invited to a party in early fall to celebrate their participation.
