Help Available For Small-Business Owners
Workshops Scheduled for May 17 in Syracuse, Watertown
Have you ever wondered about the state’s laws when it comes to starting your own business? You’re not alone. On May 17, small-business owners can talk to state employees about starting and/or growing their business. Employees from the Department of State, Labor, Taxation and Finance, the State Liquor Authority, Empire State Development, and Workers’ Compensation Board will be on hand to answer questions and help small-business owners.
This is part of the Governor’s NY Open for Small Business initiative. Barclay encouraged people in the region to take advantage of the workshops and hopes they will address peoples’ questions and concerns.
“So many people have great ideas about starting their own business but have questions about how to navigate state rules and regulations. I would encourage anyone who owns a business, or is thinking of starting one or expanding their existing business, to attend these workshops to learn about programs that may be available to help concerning hiring new workers or improving their own businesses,” said Barclay.
Workshops are being held in each region of the state in conjunction with local chambers of commerce. Representatives from the state agencies will provide opportunities for business owners to speak to them after the main presentation and will direct them to state programs and services.
Some of the topics that will be covered include starting a business and adhering to regulatory timelines; how to obtain and file tax forms; first steps for hiring employees; and how to become certified as an MWBE (Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise).
Two workshops will be held on May 17. In Watertown, the workshop will be held at 8:30 a.m. at Jefferson-Lewis-Hamilton-Herkimer-Oneida BOCES, 20104 NYS Rt. 3. In Syracuse, the workshop will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Onondaga Community College, 4585 West Seneca Turnpike.
