Barclay: Dismiss Outrageous Petition Calling for Shutdown of Nuclear Energy Plants
Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,I—Pulaski) released the following statement today following news that a petition will be reviewed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The petition was filed by four anti-nuclear advocacy groups.
“Recent news reports indicate that there is a petition calling for the shutdown of FitzPatrick Nuclear Energy plant in Oswego County and two other Entergy-operated power plants. Petitioners are seeking to have the Nuclear Regulatory Commission review their claims that Entergy has ‘financial difficulties which make it a threat to public safety.’ What troubles me is that those behind the petition are anti-nuclear advocacy groups, which for the most part are located out of state. They do not have a stake in our region. Nor do they propose any viable alternatives to the power we would lose as a result of mass-scale shutdown. These plants provide high-paying jobs for the citizens of our region, and a shutdown would have a significant economic impact on our region.”
