Assemblyman William Colton (D – Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, and Dyker Heights) other elected officials, and community organizations are fighting to reinstate the fair admissions process for middle and high school students.
“I am a long-time educator and always fought for equal opportunity for all the NYC students, no matter what their race or ethnicity is. The NYC DOE implemented a new admissions process where they are focusing less on grades, attendance, and test scores. Instead, of focusing on the student grades, test scores, and attendance the NYC schools and DOE heavily rely upon the unfair lottery process that creates a massive dilemma. They must consider attendance and test scores in the admission process, not the lottery,” Colton stated.
“In the newly implemented admissions process, each student is assigned a single random lottery number that is used to determine their admission. I strongly believe that this process is wrong, unfair, and unacceptable. The NYC schools must admit their students by merit, not through total or partial lotteries. OUR CHILDREN ARE NOT LOTTERY TICKETS,” Colton charged.
“Therefore, I am calling on all the parents, educators, and anyone who is interested in fighting for the future of our children, to come out and be a part of this important issue. We must make sure that our voices are heard. We must demand to reinstate the admission process for middle and high school students. We need your help to fight this unfair admission process. The quality and fair education must be improved for all the children in NYC schools. Our children deserve better. Together we can make a difference; we will not give up until we prevail in our fight against the bureaucratic agencies,” Colton added.
