Local Veterans Saluted by Assemblyman Colton, Councilmember Zhuang
To mark Veterans Day, Assemblyman William Colton (D—Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) and City Councilmember Susan Zhuang (D—Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend, Dyker Heights, Boro Park and Sunset Park), in conjunction with FIAO Brooklyn and the Chinese American Social Services Center (CASS), honored community members who have served in the military at a Veterans Appreciation Day event, held on Wednesday, November 13 at Il Centro, 8711 18th Avenue.
The annual tribute to veterans is an important opportunity to recognize the courage and tenacity of those who put their lives on the line for the country, said Assemblyman Colton, who told the assembled veterans, “You are our heroes.”
“Our veterans have given of themselves to ensure that all of us living in the United States of America can enjoy the freedoms that they swore to protect,” said Assemblyman Colton. “While we take time on Veterans Day to salute those who served, we should be aware, every single day, of how much they have given on our behalf. Veterans really encompass the real depth of sacrifice and valor, and that’s what this whole country needs. Their bravery and dedication make it possible for all the rest of us to live the lives we have chosen.”
“Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Veterans Appreciation Day,” stated Councilmember Zhuang. “Special thanks to my partner for this event, Assemblyman Bill Colton, our great hosts at the Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Brooklyn, as well as our wonderful sponsor the Chinese American Social Services Center, who donated the food and drinks. But, most of all, thank you to all the veterans who were in attendance. This event was for them and to recognize and honor their service and accomplishments. It was an absolute honor to be in the room with all of them.”
Speakers at the event, at which the veterans were presented with certificates of appreciation from the New York State Assembly and the New York City Council, included Jack Spatola, FIAO’s chairperson, and Sonia Valentin, the president of the 62nd Precinct Community Council. Deacon Anthony Mammoliti of St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church delivered an invocation.
