Assemblyman Colton Congratulates Dr. Tim Law on Receiving AARP’s Prestigious Andrus Award

Assemblyman William Colton (D—Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) is delighted to congratulate Dr. Tim Law, the founder of the Chinese American Social Services Center (CASS), on receiving the AARP’s Andrus Award, which recognizes exceptional volunteer efforts on the part of individuals age 50 and older.

Dr. Law received the award during the AARP End of the Year Volunteer Recognition Event held on Tuesday, December 12, at Tony’s Di Napoli, 1081 Third Avenue, in Manhattan.

Assemblyman Colton, who nominated Dr. Law for the award, was on hand to present it to him. The award, he said, “Is given to community leaders who have played an important role in helping the community. That certainly describes Dr. Law, who has been a force for good here in southwest Brooklyn since emigrating to the United States from China in 1968. Over the years, Dr. Law has been involved in so many facets of the community, from education to organizing voter registration drives to food giveaways to speaking out on behalf of the immigrant community. I am delighted that AARP accepted my recommendation and chose to honor such a distinguished member of our community.”

According to the AARP, “The annual Andrus Award for Community Service is AARP's most prestigious and visible volunteer award. It recognizes individuals who are sharing their experience, talent and skills to enrich their communities in ways that are consistent with AARP's purpose, vision and commitment to volunteer service, and that encourage others to volunteer.”

Dr. Law, AARP added, “has exemplified these qualities through his volunteering and ability to inspire other community leaders to start their own initiatives that build off of his hard work. Despite facing adversity, challenges and racism due to his background and circumstances, his consistent drive to continue helping others is a true testament to his commitment. Dr. Law has supported AARP's vision and purpose because of his ability to ensure every person is treated equally with dignity and respect.” Through all of his volunteer work, he focuses on providing every aging adult with the services and representation they deserve.”
