Assemblyman Colton Calls on People to Speak Out against City Meters Policy During Covid-19 Pandemic Crisis

Assemblyman William Colton (D – Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) together with the United Progressive Democratic Club President Nino Magali demanding that Mayor De Blasio suspend meter rules. The Mayor should use his common sense and suspend meter rules. As the Mayor of the city of New York, he must worry about people's lives and their safety not revenue in the COVID-19 pandemic crisis we face.

"People were ordered to stay home. Parking is at a premium in NYC. Now, that many stay home for their safety, parking is scarce. So, this becomes an issue, constantly going out to feed the meters. We are in a crisis the city should not be worried about making money, peoples' lives are at stake! The severe measures taken, to increase social distancing and to slow the spread of Coronavirus is futile. If people still need to go out to feed meters or to move their cars to find parking spots makes no purpose of the Governor's executive order, " Colton stated.

"Many people are following the stay at home order, to stop the spread. So, the only parking spaces available are metered parking. New Yorkers either need to move their vehicles, pay the meters or suffer the consequences of receiving a summons. How can you continuously state, "I want people to stay home and practice social distancing, but yet, at the same time, expect people to leave their homes to pay the meters. Allowing meters to remain in effect is illogical! Mayor De Blasio I hope, you do realize that you are forcing people to leave their homes. You need to do what's right! Show empathy to New Yorkers and SUSPEND METERED PARKING NOW!," UPDC President Magali added.
