Assemblyman William Colton (D – Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, and Dyker Heights) demands that Mayor De Blasio and Chancellor Carranza immediately must own up to their failure to plan for a safe NYC schools reopening on September 10, 2020.

“We can only open schools if our children and staff will be safe. This is sad, but again there is no confidence among the important parties in our school family that our children and staff will be safe on September 10. The Mayor and the Chancellor must immediately own up to their failure to do the necessary detailed work to assure the safety of our children and staff. The Chancellor and Mayor must immediately listen to those voices inside the schools to do the work necessary to reopen schools safely,” Colton stated.

“Even though not much time is left until September, we are New Yorkers and we can still, get the job done and avoid a delay in the reopening of schools on September 10. We demand that they do this now!” Colton said.

“Parents, teachers, administrators, and medical experts agree that NYC schools cannot open safely on September 10, but the Mayor and the Chancellor must start listening to those inside the schools and not to highly paid outside consultants. Parents want their children back in school on September 10, but only if it can be done safely. DOE must do necessary work for the school to be safely reopened on September 10,” added 47th Assembly District Leader Charles Ragusa.
