Assemblyman Colton Commends Governor Cuomo For Commissioning the State to Build St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Monument in NYC
Assemblyman William Colton (D – Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, and Dyker Heights) commends Governor Cuomo for commissioning the State to build a monument of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini in New York City.
“About a year ago I sent a letter to Mayor DeBlasio about the great concern that was raised in the community after an organization named SHE Built NYC rejected the public’s choice to build the statue of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. Sister Frances Xavier Cabrini came to the United States in 1889 with a small group of sisters. She founded 67 institutions within 35 years, including orphanages, schools, and hospitals, dedicated to caring for the poor, uneducated, sick, and abandoned. My office had circulated petitions in favor of building the monument of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. I was very impressed when I heard that Governor Cuomo has announced that the State will commission this well-deserved monument,” Colton stated.
“This year Monday, October 12, 2020, Governor Cuomo marked Columbus Day by dedicating a statue of the Italian American saint known as Mother Cabrini in lower Manhattan, New York City. I am pleased that the monument of the Italian American legacy was finally unveiled by the Hudson River with a view of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty on Columbus Day for the Roman Catholic nun who was canonized in 1946,” Colton added.
