Assemblymember Yuh-Line Niou Calls For Expedited Repairs at 85 Bowery and Date for Tenants’ Return

New York, NY – Today, tenants of 85 Bowery rallied at the entrance of City Hall to express their frustration with their ongoing displacement and delays in repairs. Among tenants’ demands was a call for the city to provide a deadline which provides a date for tenants to return home. In response, Assemblymember Yuh-Line Niou released the following statement:

“It has been almost half a year since these tenants were evacuated, and still, they have no clear idea of when they will be able to return home. It has been one delay after another, and while it is paramount that the tenants return to a safe and habitable home, I believe that repairs should be expedited in order to bring the tenants home in a timely manner. 85 Bowery tenants were initially supposed to move back into their apartments at the end of March, now, there’s a chance that some work will not be complete until late in summer. This is unacceptable, and we must hold the landlord accountable.

“I urge the city and the landlord to provide a transparent and clear timeline that includes a date for tenants to move back in. I continue to stand with the tenants of 85 Bowery, and I hope that we can work together to bring these families home swiftly.”
