The governor’s budget once
again fails Suffolk’s children

The governor’s budget once again shortchanges our local schools. Sadly, the governor continues to ignore the proven ability of programs like smaller class sizes, universal pre-K, and full-day kindergarten to help our students achieve their full potential. These cuts leave less money for supplies, technology hardware, library textbooks and other essentials.

Under the governor’s proposal, locally only Brentwood and Central Islip schools will have a measly increase, which won’t even cover the rising cost of living on Long Island. Other Suffolk schools would also be shortchanged by the governor’s budget, including:

  • Bay Shore, a decrease of $163,000 and
  • Islip, a decrease of $66,600

Governor’s budget raises the cost
of getting a college education

The governor’s budget would:

x Cut the Tuition Assistance Program
x Raise SUNY tuition by $500
x Shortchange Suffolk County Community College by $2.5 million, shifting the cost to property taxpayers and students through tuition increases

The Assembly’s plan will:

checkmark Restore money to the TAP program
checkmark Reject the SUNY tuition hike
checkmark Increase aid to SCCC – $2.5 million over the next two years
checkmark Increase funding for vital opportunity programs like EOP, HEOP, and SEEK

Ramos will fight to make sure our schools get their fair share. He believes investing in our children’s education is an investment in our future.

“The governor proposed a budget that shortchanges our schools, while providing tax cuts to the wealthy. That’s wrong, and I’m going to work with my colleagues in the Assembly to pass a fair budget that invests in our children’s education and provides tax relief to working families.”
