Dear Neighbor,

Brentwood and Central Islip are the heart of our community. And, Roberto Clemente Park is a prized part of our neighborhood. When my children were young, I took them to Roberto Clemente Park to play and today I take my granddaughter. I, and many of you, have created precious memories at this park. And now, due to a shameful lack of oversight on the part of the Town of Islip, Roberto Clemente Park is closed indefinitely.

Words cannot express my outrage over the recent revelation of illegal dumping in our community by Town of Islip contractors - first Roberto Clemente park in Brentwood and now the site on Sage Street and Route 111 in Central Islip. This atrocious act against our children and families is unconscionable. The fact that the dumping of toxic waste was allowed by Islip officials for nearly a year in a place where our children play and families come for recreation is horrifying.

As your state representative, I want to let you know that I will not stand by the wayside and allow our community to be used as a dumping ground. I will not allow unscrupulous people to put the health of our citizens at risk. And, I will not allow our community be kept in the dark on this matter.

I stand committed to keep you informed every step of the way on any new developments that arise on this issue. The Department of Environmental Conservation has assessed the environmental impact of this illegal dumping and they have found asbestos contaminates in the soil and air. I have called on the state Department of Health to conduct an investigation into the possible health risks associated with the illegally dumped hazardous materials. And, the District Attorney is looking into those responsible for committing this unspeakable act upon our community.

Those to blame for these actions must be held accountable. Environmental justice must be served and I promise you I will not rest until it is.
