A reminder from Assemblyman
David G.
McDonough

Assemblyman David G. McDonough reminds you:
“Do not miss your opportunity for substantial tax savings!”

The School Tax Relief (STAR) Program provides a partial exemption from school taxes for owner-occupied, primary residences (one-, two- or three-family homes), as well as mobile and farm homes, condominiums, cooperative apartments and multiple-use properties of which a portion is used by the owner as a primary residence.

The Basic STAR exemption is for all homeowners, regardless of age or income. If you own your primary residence, your property should be eligible for the Basic STAR exemption, but you must apply for it.

Senior Citizen Homeowners:

If you are 65 years of age or will be during the year in which the exemption takes effect and your annually adjusted gross income* does not exceed $64,650, you may qualify for the Enhanced STAR exemption.

*For the Enhanced STAR exemption only: The definition of income is based on your federal adjusted gross income, less any taxable IRA distribution. Income eligibility for 2005-2006 is based on the 2003 tax return.

The filing period for the Basic STAR and Enhanced STAR exemptions begins Sept. 1; the deadline for filing applications in Nassau County is Jan. 2, 2005**
** Nassau County taxable status date.
