Working to Lower Your Property Tax Burden.

Assemblyman McDonough understands the impact New York’s property tax burden places on individuals, families, and especially, seniors. Most homeowners dread the time of year when they receive their school and property tax bills.

Property taxes and the burdens they place on homeowners are why we are seeing more New Yorkers selling their homes and moving to other states, why many seniors living on fixed incomes are forced to sell their homes, and why individuals cannot afford to buy homes.

Assemblyman McDonough’s
Plan to Lower the Property Tax Burden:

Assemblyman McDonough wants to provide $1.75 billion in additional school tax relief by indexing the Basic and Enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR) program exemptions to the state’s median housing value. This would increase current STAR exemptions by 70 percent.

Assemblyman McDonough wants restrictions on unfunded mandates because local governments and school districts must pass those increased costs to property owners. He has sponsored legislation that would require certain state mandates be funded by the state.

Assemblyman McDonough wants to reform Medicaid to put an end to fraud, waste and abuse - an approximate annual $4.5 billion cost. He has sponsored legislation that would enhance Medicaid fraud recovery and reporting requirements to strengthen a county’s ability to pursue the abuse and make it easier for individuals to report problems.

Assemblyman McDonough wants to provide $72.86 million in Restoration Aid to school districts that years ago suffered cuts to their state operating aid allocations. This means school districts are operating with less state aid or have passed the increased costs on to property taxpayers.
