Assemblyman Tom Alfano’s Elmont and North Valley Stream Summer Community Insider!

Assemblyman Tom Alfano
Dear Friends:

It’s been a real busy summer for me! This special newsletter was developed to keep you in the loop regarding some special events I sponsor during the summer months.

These programs are: “The Women of Distinction,” “Assemblyman Alfano’s 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament,” and the “Assemblyman Alfano Soccer Clinic.” Each of these initiatives were an outstanding success. Over the past few weeks, I have had numerous calls and e-mails from residents wanting to see some of the scenes from these great affairs. Here is a special newsletter I developed to share the great news!

The basketball and soccer programs provide a positive outlet for our young people. Having them playing outside, in the fresh air and getting exercise in a fun event is where they should be- not in front of a TV set. These programs were created and staffed by our young people. I am very proud of their success.

The Women of Distinction program has turned out to be the “Summer Affair” in the 21st Assembly District. A standing room only crowd jammed the Stewart Manor Country Club where I honored 24 women and the Elmont Memorial High School Girls’ Basketball Team for their service to the community. The entertainment and speeches were truly uplifting and made us all proud of our community.

As always, if I can ever be of service to you as your assemblyman, please do not hesitate to call upon me at 437-5577 or e-mail me at alfanot@assembly.state.ny.us. I’m proud to serve and fight for our community.

Sincerely,

Alfano Women of
Distinction
Extravaganza!

The evening was picture perfect! Twenty-four women
throughout the greater community were honored for their
professional development, community service and improving our quality of
life. The program is now in its sixth year and is getting bigger and better!

The room was packed with so many people, it actually spilled out into the
hallway. Onlookers peeked in the windows as they were out for an evening
walk. The excitement was electric. The event kicked-off with NYPD
police officer Randi Locicero leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance and
Gabriella Sam singing the Star Spangled Banner.

Specialty Award honorees Dr. Lynn Pombonyo won the Sandra Day
O’Connor Award. AnnMarie Giarrizzo won the Emma Willard Award.
Kathleen Sottile won the Eleanor Roosevelt Award. Pam Margaroli won
the Susan B. Anthony Award. And the finale of the evening was the
presentation of the Jeanne Kirkpatrick Award to Leslyn Stewart.

For me, the presentation to Leslyn Stewart was truly moving.
Leslyn has been a true leader in the fight against gun violence and
has been an inspiration to us all. Leslyn’s husband, Dillon, an NYPD
Officer was killed in the line of duty from an illegal gun. Her remarks
about sacrifice, community, advocacy and family were moving to us all.

The Women of Distinction honorees were dance studio owner
Janet Greene, nurse and NYSNA coordinator Jacqueline Grant, nurse
and educator Laura Ferone, executive Rosaleen Shea,
anesthesiologist Dr. Vilma Joseph Turner, educators Tohnya Williams
Marsh and Francina Roman, writer Sophia Vilceus, community activist
Charlotte Orlando, Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary officer
Paula Malloy, activist Savy Naraidu, businesswoman Nicole Alexander,
counselor Kathy Dunne, PTA organizers AnnMarie Disibio and
Tina Castelluzzo, administrator Sally Ponce and young adult winners
Julie DellaCorte and Patrice Pryce.

I also gave out a special honor to the Elmont Memorial High School
Girls’ Varsity Basketball team for their impact on our young people.
The honorees were: Laura Rivera, Theresa Jones, Bianca Jean,
Toni Ann Lawrence, Mystique Rivera, Abogo Kalu, Ayana Duncanson,
Cherisse Benjamin, Reauna Dorner, Jasmin Cobbs, Jasmine
Varughese and Carossa McAllister.

Special entertainment was provided by opera singer Simona Rodano,
Aliya Dorner and the Elmont Memorial Jazz and Floral Park Choirs.
My guest speakers for the event were Schneider’s Children’s Hospital
Dr. Esernio Jenssen and state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos.

The evening was truly a special night for everyone. I also want to thank Sandra Smith for doing an outstanding job as my MC. Last but truly not least, Congratulations Ladies! You are Women of Distinction!

GOOOOOOOAAALLL!
Alfano Soccer Clinic a Community Success!

Hundreds of youngsters from 1st grade through 8th grade came to Dutch Broadway School to participate in my 1st annual Soccer Clinic! From beginners to pros, our budding soccer stars learned to kick the ball, dribble, pass and shoot! The clinic also stressed teamwork, working hard in school, striving for your dreams and making a difference in the community.

Coaches for the clinic were: Ahkeel Rodney, Ajani Jones, Fabrice Georges, Rick Georges, Joel Jackson, Bobby Odugbesan, Hakeem Joseph, Kevin Johnson, Willy Williams, Marvin Lee, Alex Bowen, Diana Allen, Laura Rivera, Julian Clark, Mike Hayes, Saudi Clark, Xavier Roberts, Jessica Diaz, Emile Chang, Jimmy Brown, Quincy Graham, Stephanie Cadet, Amanda Sims, Zachary Marshall, Andrew McCarthy, Kyle Johnson, John VanHaaren, Leroy Graham, John Dieudonne and Dominique White.

The clinic split our soccer stars into grade and skill levels where our young people
learned about stretching, communication and the fundamentals. Drills were developed to
not only build skills but most importantly to have fun! Shooting drills were developed to
show players about using the different parts of the foot in soccer ball control. Needless to
say, the highlights were the games players engaged in. For the record, the rumor of the
4th and 5th graders beating the 6th graders in a mini scrimmage can be fully confirmed!

On the final day of the clinic, I sponsored lunch for our players, parents and siblings. We
awarded soccer medallions to our stars and a coaches game was played.
The clinic was a great success. On a personal note, I want to thank the
Elmont School district for the use of their fields. I also want to congratulate
all the children from Elmont and North Valley Stream for their participation
in the program. Here are some scenes from the Soccer Clinic!

Slam Dunkin’!
Alfano 3-on-3 Shatters Records!

If you want to see some outstanding action on the basketball court, look no further than my annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament! Over 70 teams competed in the contest! Boys and Girls battled it out on the courts for the 3-on-3 title and bragging rights. The basketball tournament is in its second year and the attendance doubled! In all, close to 420 players hit their shots in the tournament.

By the way, the rumors are true, I played a little one-on-one with Elmont Memorial’s Patrick Hansen. For the record, Patrick has a great jump shot and lay-up. Great Job Patrick!

The basketball courts were refurbished through a $40,000 grant I was able to channel to our schools. Joining me in rooting on our teams were state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, Superintendent Al Harper, and principals Ken Rosner and Walter Aksionoff! I also want to thank the hundreds of parents who streamed in and out of the tournament all day long to root on their favorite teams!

Some of the teams competing in the tournament were: The Gotham Ballers, The “B” Girls, Devils, Mavriks, Street Ballers, DTL, the Eagles, NYZ Street Ballaz, Big Shots, White Dragons, AOL Swisherz, the Destroyers, B-Ballers, Lil Saints, the Angels, Elmont Renegades, North Valley Stream Vipers, MSK Ballers, the Many’s, Night Ballers 300, the Rasheeds, Enemy of the State, the Ballers, Wildcats, New Skool Ballerz, Hot Shots, Locustwood Lakers, We Are Legend, the High Flyers, LCM, Lil Demons of the Court, Retro, Mini Celtics, Malu Ballerz, Elmont Slammers, Howell Road Howlerz, SJA, Dutch Dynasty, Blazers, Yankers, High Ballerz, IceBoxx, Elmont High Flys, Jamaican Jammerz, ATM, Shoreshots, Elmont Reps, Street 101, NYC Ballers, Street Kingz, Comets, Tigers, Strong Island Cannons, Air Jordan, Howell Slamerz, Team Buckets, BBA, Sewanhaka Slammers, Go Gettas, Dutch Ballerz2, Kings of the Court, Blowout Squad, Elmont Elite, St. Vincent’s Victory, Belmont Ballerz, Millenium Knockouts, Team PIRU, FJD, the Ester’s, Team Splash, Allstars, Empire, Next Level, Team Deuces, Gotham’s Greatest, the Big 3, Spalding, Haitian Lightning, Gotham Sure Shots, Power Squad, Dever Danger and Alden Power.
