Hundreds of trailers that were introduced as a temporary solution to overcrowding have become permanent fixtures in most Queens' schools. For more than a decade, students have been forced to attend class in trailers that are outdated, in deplorable conditions and pose a potential risk to students' health. Trailers parked in city public schools to ease overcrowding are now themselves packed with too many students. Not only are these trailers inadequate and subpar for learning, they also inhabit playgrounds and schoolyards, leaving students with no area for outdoor recreation or exercise.
As the Chair of the Committee on Education, I aim to accelerate the elimination of these transportable classroom units. No child deserves to attend class in a substandard and unsafe environment.
Please join me in signing the petition to eliminate the use of transportable classroom units in our schools.
