Heating/Cooling Your Home:
- Install shades to keep sun out in summer and heat in during winter.
- Move furniture away from heating registers. Blocking or restricting airflow makes heating systems work harder.
- Keep doors and vents shut to keep heat or air conditioning in. Close all doors to unused rooms.
- Update all insulation throughout your home. Proper insulation in walls, ceilings and floors reduces heat loss.
- Seal out drafts by replacing missing caulking in doors or windows.
- Set your thermostat to a steady, comfortable temperature during each season. Try not to raise and lower the thermostat too
often. Use a programmable thermostat.
- Fans can make your air conditioner’s job easier by circulating air. Ceiling fans can also be effective.
- Spread your utility cost throughout the year using budget billing.Call your electric and gas company for information.
Energy Conservation/Lighting:
- Purchase energy saving appliances with “Energy Star” labels.
- Turn lights off when leaving a room.
- Replace old bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs that use less energy.
- Keep fixtures clean. Dirty bulbs produce less light.
- Plug televisions and home appliances into a surge protector and shut them off from the surge protector.
Water Conservation:
- Use water filters instead of buying bottledwater.
- Wash larger loads of laundry, instead of frequent smaller ones.
- Wash clothes in warm or cold water.
- Take short showers. It uses half the hot water of a bath.
- Use flow regulators on faucets and shower heads.
- Don’t let the water run when shaving, shampooing or brushing your teeth. Turn the water on only when you need it.
- Wash dishes by hand and give the dishwasher a break or run a full dishwasher.
Vehicle Decision Making:
- Choose fuel efficient hybrid motor vehicles.
- Allow engine to heat up a maximum of 45 seconds.
- Proper car maintenance (oil and filter changes, correct tire pressure and tuning) improves performance and saves gas.
- Drive with your windows down and park in the shade, when it’s warm, to avoid using the air conditioner.
- Remove unnecessary objects from your car. Extra weight uses more fuel.
- Use Cruise Control to maintain 50 to 55mph for better gas mileage.
- Being less aggressive behind the wheel means burning less fuel.
Plant a lot of trees around your home. Trees are natural air-conditioners and air fresheners.
When shopping take along a large canvas bag instead of using plastic bags.
When running errands by car, try combining close destinations and utilize local stores.
Take public transportation when able. Less driving means more savings.
Purchase water filters instead of buying bottled water and use reusable water bottles.
Use rechargeable batteries when possible.
Minimize the time your refrigerator door remains open. Cold air lost requires the compressor to run longer and produces more heat,
using more electricity.
Keep your refrigerator or freezer full, without over-crowding. Empty refrigerators operate less efficiently.
