COLTON CONTINUES FIGHT TO STOP WASTE STATION
photo Assemblyman Colton organized a rally for Bensonhurst residents to voice their opinions against Transfer Station.

COLTON WARNS OF IMPACT

The City of New York proposed to convert the former incinerator site at Shore Parkway and 26th Avenue to a Waste Transfer Station. Garbage brought by trucks would be containerized and loaded onto barges for transport to an undetermined location.

But the city has failed to satisfy how concerns about traffic congestion, smells, water pollution, and noise will affect the neighborhood.

COLTON LEADS FIGHT

Last year, Assemblyman Colton sponsored a Town Hall meeting to alert the community to the negative impacts. A community task force led by community leaders, Charles Ragusa and Jeanette Givant, sponsored a rally in the summer of 2005 and collected thousands of petitions to the City Council against the proposed waste dump.

Unfortunately the City Council has failed to reject the plan.

COMMUNITY FIGHT GOES ON

Undismayed by the failure of the City Council to block the plan, Colton continues the fight. He wrote to the Army Corps of Engineers, seeking answers to the effects of dredging of toxins buried in the waterbed from years of the site’s use as an incinerator.

Colton is now mobilizing to plan the next stage of the fight to demand the Department of Environmental Conservation conduct public hearings in the neighborhood and reject the application for a waste station.

If you want to join the community fight, please fill out and return the form below.

HELP ASSEMBLYMAN COLTON STOP THE SOUTHWEST TRANSFER STATION

I oppose the Waste Transfer Station on Shore Parkway and 26th Avenue because it will hurt the neighborhood’s quality of life. I demand that the Department of Environmental Conservation conduct hearings in the neighborhood and reject the application for the Waste Transfer Station.

COLTON FIGHTING FOR IMPROVING OUR SCHOOLS

FOR YEARS ASSEMBLYMAN COLTON HAS SOUNDED THE ALARM ABOUT PROVIDING FAIR FUNDING FOR OUR CHILDREN

photo Assemblyman Colton stands behind children’s education.

Colton Called For Change

Assemblyman Colton has been leading the fight to correct the inequitable funding for New York City school children. For decades New York City was receiving only 34% of state funding while serving 38% of the state’s school children. This resulted in New York City schools having fewer computers and lower salaries for our dedicated teachers, less library books per child and higher class size.

Colton Demanded More Funding For Our Schools

After collecting thousands of letters to the Governor and organizing parents and staff to demand more funding for New York City children, Assemblyman Colton fought to close the gap in funding. Finally, more monies were provided for the programs which improve education such as lower class size, universal pre-K, full day kindergarten and teacher development.

State Budget Makes Progress

This year’s state budget provides a $501 million increase for New York City schools to build and modernize our schools, by providing $1.8 billion this year and $9.4 billion over the next four years for New York City.

Investing In Our Children

Not only has Assemblyman Colton lead the fight for education monies but he also promotes the education of our children. He initiated programs such as his annual Summer Reading Challenge. Each year, Assemblyman Colton distributes brochures encouraging children to read with their parents during the summer and then presents certificates to those children who return the form showing they have met his Summer Reading Challenge.

Those who wish to obtain the Reading Challenge brochures can call Assemblyman Colton’s office at (718)236-1598 or visit the office at 211 King’s Highway.

COLTON PROTECTING NEIGHBORHOOD WITH DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
photo Assemblyman Colton urges you to have these items ready in case of an emergency.
On March 9th, Assemblyman Colton organized a Town Meeting with the Office of Emergency Management to teach over 200 people the importance of disaster preparedness.

Colton Says Awareness Is Key

The most important aspect of disaster preparedness is neighborhood education. The more informed the public is, the more likely they are to safely deal with an emergency.

Planning ahead is another important step. Families should prepare escape plans and meeting locations in the event of a disaster.

COLTON MOBILIZING EFFORT TO INFORM PUBLIC

Assemblyman Colton was instrumental in informing people about the importance of being prepared. One tip for families is to have a ‘Go Bag’ with all the supplies needed for an emergency.

These supplies include bottled water, canned foods, extra clothing, blankets, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, pet supplies, candles, a radio and other things needed for emergency situations.

If you need more information about disaster preparedness, contact my community office at 211 Kings Highway between west 10th and 11th streets (telephone: (718) 236-1598).
