COLTON CLAIMS VICTORY IN FUNDS FOR NYC SCHOOLS

photo Assemblyman Colton and Senator Carl Kruger speaking with a sixth grade class at Seth Low Intermediate School on opening day.
Assemblyman Colton, a member of the Ways and Means committee, has long fought for fair school funding for N.Y.C. children. Finally, after a Campaign for Fiscal Equity court decision, the 2007 State budget changes the school aid formula to provide predictable and equitable funding.

MORE MONIES FOR NYC SCHOOLS

N.Y.C. will receive 43% of new foundation aid, representing some 600 million dollars more for reducing class size, funding universal pre-kindergarten, improving teacher training and other such school improvements. The budget requires accountability for the spending of these monies. These increases will allow city officials to give school grants for computers, classroom and building improvements and other educational materials.

MORE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT NEEDED

Now Assemblyman Colton is fighting to make certain that the N.Y.C. Department of Education gives real input to parents to ensure educational excellence for all our children.

INVESTING IN HIGHER EDUCATION

In addition, Colton was appointed to the Joint Budget Conference Committee on Higher Education. He successfully fought to beat back attempts to cut the college Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and he fought to obtain more monies for C.U.N.Y. and S.U.N.Y. operating budgets and for college opportunity programs.

COLTON KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY SAFE

Public safety is a key priority for Assemblyman Colton. He works closely with the local police precincts to keep our neighborhood safe.

CRACKING DOWN ON SEXUAL PREDATORS

This year he supported enacted laws to toughen penalties for heinous sex crimes, to create the crime of predatory sexual assault, to eliminate the criminal statute of limitations for class B felony sex crimes and to expand the criminal DNA database for convicted criminals.

ESTABLISHING A TOUGH CIVIL COMMITMENT LAW

Colton also voted to pass a civil commitment law to keep dangerous sexual predators off our streets, even after their prison terms. The law requires treatment while in civil commitment, an annual review of their status and intensive supervision for those offenders not civilly confined.

COLTON LEADS FIGHT AGAINST WASTE TRANSFER DUMP

N.Y.C. Department of Sanitation has proposed building a Marine Transfer Station on Shore Parkway and Bay 41 Street, thereby endangering our neighborhood quality of life by contaminating our waters and fish, creating traffic congestion and threatening our enjoyment of Dreier Offerman Park and Nellie Bly Amusement Center.

In August, Assemblyman Colton, together with a Task Force led by community leaders, Charles Ragusa and Jeanette Givant, organized a flotilla protest of over 50 boats to highlight the recreational and residential importance of this site that includes three parks, two marinas, a school for challenged children, senior housing and three nursing homes. Although the proposal for the waste site had been approved by the City Council, it requires an approval from the State Department of Environmental Conservation before it can be built.

Currently, D.E.C. has begun a public comment period. Assemblyman Colton is demanding that a public hearing be held in the neighborhood, so that the community can voice the serious environmental and quality of life problems this plan will inflict upon our neighborhood.

COLTON SAYS PUBLIC TRANSIT IMPROVEMENTS
ARE ANSWER TO TRAFFIC CONGESTION

Assemblyman Colton believes making public transportation more affordable and more accessible is the key to reducing traffic congestion.

CONTINUING THE FIGHT FOR PUBLIC TRANSIT IMPROVEMENTS

Over the years Assemblyman Colton has fought against transit fare increases. He fought to make public transit cleaner and safer by improving subway stations, especially on the “N” and “D” lines, extending all B82 bus service beyond 25 Avenue, expanding express bus service and introducing express service on the “F” line. “Without these and other such public transit improvements we will not succeed in reducing traffic congestion,” says Assemblyman Colton.
