Dear Constituent:
Seasons Greetings: 2004 is about to pass into history.
How future generations will view how we did and what legacy
we left is certainly deserving of some reflection.
Without much dispute, there is surely a consensus that
our nation remains as divided as we were four years ago. The
election data confirms the continuing divide in which one half
of America views and interprets the same events as somewhat
different pictures. The world stands amazed at us.
George W. Bush had promised to accomplish some healing,
but instead he led us into a war we didn’t need to fight.
Our President pulled some wool over our eyes and a small
majority, enough to re-elect him, fell for this. It has cost us
so far over $200 Billion and more than 1000 soldiers, dead.
There is fear and confusion in America. For some families
whose heroes’ spirits will forever roam the deserts of Iraq,
there is mourning, sadness, and yes, maybe even some anger.
But these holidays come nonetheless.
For Christians like me, it’s Christmas. I’ll celebrate the
birth of Christ and reflect on the tidings of joy and his gospel
of redemption for sinful mankind. My Jewish constituents
will light the Menorah and celebrate Hanukkah. They will
remember the courage and faith of their ancestors who fought
religious persecution, and the miracle of the oil that gave light
for eight full days instead of the expected one.
The story of Kwanzaa will be told to African-Americans
young and old, and for many new Americans this melting pot
of culture will be overcoming.
Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, whatever
religion, all will be caught up in this magic period of joy,
good will, good cheer, and spending gone wild.
Yet there will always be some who cannot join in the joy
without help from others who have been blessed. Yes, there
will always be some in need, and yes, charity should still be
the essence of our holiday spirit. So please let us spread the
joy by helping up someone who is down and in need of a
lift.
As 2004 speeds into memory, I want you to know that I
remain deeply humbled and honored by you allowing me the
privilege of serving as your member from the 58th Assembly
District. I thank you for your continued trust in me and look
forward to continue working for you during the next legislative
term.
In the spirit of the season, may you and all your loved
ones enjoy good health, happiness and prosperity, and be safe
with God’s richest blessing throughout the holidays and the
New Year.
