Saving Staten Islanders money
This year, Assemblyman Cusick sponsored the law to cap the sales tax on gas in New York State – saving New Yorkers up to $450 million this year (Ch. 35 of 2006).

Cusick also fought to bring relief to Staten Island taxpayers by:


check mark Eliminating the state sales tax on clothing and footwear under $110. Now, Staten Island residents will not pay any more at the Staten Island Mall than they would pay at the Woodbridge Mall in New Jersey.

check mark Increasing New York City’s existing School Tax Reduction Credit - saving New Yorkers an additional $212 million this year and raising total STAR savings in New York City to $1.1 billion this year


Addressing Staten Island’s transportation problems

Assemblyman Cusick authored legislation to provide much-needed bus transportation into Bayonne, NJ - allowing Staten Island commuters to link up with the Hudson-Bergan light rail station - which provides a quicker commute into Manhattan (A.11333, delivered to the governor).

In this year’s budget, Cusick also fought to remove the monthly surcharge for E-ZPass customers – putting money back into the pockets of Staten Island motorists.



Working to control overdevelopment

Assemblyman Michael Cusick believes one of the best ways to curb runaway overdevelopment is to allow the people most affected by it to speak out against future building proposals. That’s why he authored legislation that would give neighborhood residents advance notice about any applications to build on state-designated wetlands, as well as give residents an opportunity to make their voices heard at public hearings (A.7461-B).

Assemblyman Cusick also sponsored legislation that would give tax breaks to those who purchase older homes and maintain them – helping to eliminate the practice of tearing down older homes and erecting two or three smaller homes in their place (A.11268).



Standing up for Staten Island

Assemblyman Cusick recently joined Senator Chuck Schumer in opposing a proposal to reroute air traffic through the Staten Island region. The Federal Aviation Administration is considering a plan that would subject Staten Island to a highly disproportionate level of jet noise.

Cusick passed legislation that would help prevent able-bodied people from using parking spaces designated for handicapped motorists (A.2147-A, delivered to the governor). Under this legislation, the last three digits of the handicapped driver’s license or non-driver identification card would be placed on his or her’s car hangtag.
