Assemblymember Kevin Cahill is the state legislative champion of property tax relief. He
believes that schools should be fully funded through state revenues and that real property
owners need relief and need it now. That is why he supported expansion and improvement
of the STAR program, adding $1.3 billion in real property tax savings for New Yorkers. He
will keep fighting for real reform, but in the meantime, STAR rebate checks can help, and
here is how:
-
Property owners who receive Basic STAR will have to apply for a rebate check,
and its amount will be based on income
-
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is providing these property
owners with application instructions through the mail
-
Visit www.tax.state.ny.us/star/2007 for the
timing of mailings to your area
-
Qualifying homeowners have until Nov. 30 to apply
-
Conveniently, Seniors who receive Enhanced STAR will receive a rebate check
automatically. Senior households that make more than $70,650 aren’t eligible for
Enhanced STAR, but may apply for Basic STAR. Visit
www.orps.state.ny.us/star/star_forms.cfm
-
You must be a STAR recipient to get the rebate check; visit
www.orps.state.ny.us/star/faq.htm for information
on how to enroll or call your local assessor’s office.
Easing the property tax burden
Assemblymember Cahill helped pass a final state budget that provides New York homeowners with
$1.3 billion in property tax relief. Under Middle Class STAR, New Yorkers will see a STAR tax rebate
based on a sliding scale tied to income. To find out how much you may be eligible to receive, visit
